The self build brief
Liz and Huge from Malahide decided to take on their back garden, which had been neglected for a number of years. They’d just spent a considerable amount having the house renovated and didn’t have the budget to have their garden built. Neither Hugh nor Liz would consider themselves builders but Hugh wasn’t afraid to take a project on. Hugh did an amazing job considering his lack of experience. With a solid design to work from and with a couple of follow up calls and one visit, he was able to complete all the work himself.
Below are a few shots of the garden before, a picture of the proposal I prepared and some finished garden photos.
Liz and Hugh were keen to create a garden that reflected the clean, contemporary feel of the interior and which gave them a greater sense of space and places to enjoy the morning and evening sun.
Hugh completed the work over a couple of months wokring on the weekends and some evenings after work. He really enjoyed it and the family absolutely loved the completed garden. In my experience, people who take on and complete self builds enjoy their gardens far more.

What they said…
“We employed Barry to design our garden after hearing about him from a friend. By working with Barry, we are able to achieve far more than we originally thought and to be fair, for a lot less than we thought too! The original garden was a right mess, we’d just renovated inside and didn’t really know what to do with the garden – none of us were gardeners! Barry devoted a lot of time to helping understand how we could get the most from our garden and I’m delighted he did. Once we knew what we could get, he took care of everything and now we have a garden that the whole family loves…and now uses. We’re even starting to do a bit of gardening…but only a bit!! I’ve been recommending him ever since”.
